Expected Harvest
by Farmer Dana
Harvest #17 (Week A) should include potatoes, winter squash, onions, leeks, garlic, scallions, kale, lettuce, tomatoes, hot peppers, okra, Swiss chard, endive, eggplant, rosemary, cilantro, dill, and parsley. U-pick should include snap beans, edamame, green/less-ripe tomatoes (cherry, plum, grape), tomatillos, flowers, and herbs. U-pick crops are quickly winding down; this may be the final week for many of them. Very soon we need to prepare the field for waterway excavation to solve the flash flood problem out there. Also, we're planning to take a brief intermission from sweet pepper harvesting to let them bulk up and ripen.

Goodbye Peas & Strawbs, Hello Cukes & Zukes
Expected Harvest
by Farmer Dana
Harvest #6 (Week B) should include beets, head lettuce, romaine lettuce, garlic scapes, cucumbers, yellow and green zucchini, hakurei turnips, fennel, radicchio, kale, chard, Italian dandelion, endive, cilantro, dill, and parsley. U-pick will probably only include herbs this week as we wait on raspberries and beans to ripen and mature.
A pick up room board note: When we write, for example, "1 lb total combined weight from:" we mean you may take up to 1 pound total from the listed options which could be 1 lb of a single listed item or any combination of the listed items totaling 1 pound.
A pea note: The snow and snap pea crops suffered this year. It was the worst production in our 11-year tenure for sure. We are certain it was due to the early onset of pea root rot which is caused by organisms in the soil or potting mix or even compost (Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, or Aphanomyces). Normally a simple crop rotation plan ensures crop success. Last year at this time each member was receiving 2 quarts of peas. Please accept our apologies for this disappointment. We'll plan for a better yield next year.

Expected Harvest
by Farmer Dana

Sampling baby kale mix and arugula in the high tunnel.
Late Fall harvest #4 (Week B) should include sweet potatoes, rutabaga, daikons, carrots, beets, mini cabbage, napa/chinese cabbage, potatoes, garlic, spinach, lettuce mix, arugula, and greens mix. Some items will be a choice.

Harvested from our cover crop patches, these daikons are also called 'tillage radishes' due to their ability to break up hardpan and loosen soil with their large taproot. A very easy way to incorporate these into your meals is to simply grate them into whatever dish your making. That way they cook quickly and blend in and you only need to add what you think is appropriate since they keep well. Exterior evidence of insect interaction can be safely ignored.

Expected Harvest
by Farmer Derek

Assessing fall crops in Field 7c a week or so ago. Carrots, watermelon radishes, daikon radishes, rutabaga, hakurei turnips, arugula, greens mix, kale, radicchio, lettuce, dill, cilantro, parsley, fennel, spinach, chard, napa cabbage, kohlrabi, and bok choy. It's a cosmopolitan field.
Harvest #19 (Week A) should include beets with greens, potatoes, leeks, onions, garlic, tomatoes, lettuce, greens (kale, dandelion, endive), herbs (dill, cilantro, parsley), sweet peppers, hot peppers, okra, eggplant, carrots, and celeriac. Some items will be a choice and some may not be available during all pick up times. U-pick should include husk cherries, tomatillos, herbs, and flowers.
*<>*We're doing our best to ensure a steady flow of produce from the fields to the pick up room. Suffice it to say it has been a very challenging growing season, mostly due to excessive rain (probably will end up being our wettest season in 10 years). Up until now we've felt fairly pleased with the overall yield and harvest of most of the crops considering the adverse weather but right now we are noticing slow and stunted growth of some of our early fall staples that typically begin yielding extremely well by now such as savoy cabbage, broccoli, kale, chard, spinach, arugula, and greens mix. There has been an obvious slow down in growth the past few weeks due to an absent sun and too much moisture. We hope from your perspective that the pick up room produce has been satisfactory and that you understand the connection between weather and farming. We do apologize for this inconvenience and will think critically for ways to avoid this problem in the future.*<>*

A brief note about pick up room herbs: basil on the farm is succumbing to seasonal basil downy mildew and pretty soon will be absent until next summer; quantities of dill and cilantro will probably be limited for a couple weeks due to erratic germination from the heat and humidity; and parsley won't be available again until this fall. Thai basil and Italian dandelion should be available this week in the pick up room, plus the herbs in the herb garden for U-Pick.

Getting some help uncovering greens in the movable high tunnel on another (beautiful) 60 degree January day.
Winter Harvest #6 (Week B) should include sweet potatoes, garlic, rosemary, lettuce mix, root choice #1 (celeriac, purple daikon, scarlet turnips), root choice #2 (carrots, beets), greens choice (baby kale, spinach), and cabbage (napa, red, green). Expected Harvest
By Derek McGeehan
Winter Harvest #3 (Week A) should include potatoes, garlic, lettuce mix, carrots, greens choice (arugula, baby kale, spinach), cabbage choice (napa, green, red), and a root choice (kohlrabi, purple daikon radish, hakurei turnips, scarlet queen turnips).
**We're still thawing out after the deep freeze and the greens are only just beginning to show their tolerance so we're not exactly 100% sure what greens will be in the share besides lettuce mix**
Checking on the greens underneath two layers of interior row cover in the high tunnel. Amazingly, as of Sunday afternoon, much of them look like they should be harvestable this week and beyond. The taste is also truly incredible thanks to the cold; I'm pretty sure that was the sweetest kale I've ever eaten.

Quick note on the raspberries: They're less plentiful this year so we're unable to give everyone a 1/2-pint like we did last season. We just transplanted another 500 plants to increase quantities for next season (current patch was started with only 250 plants). Later this season we'll hopefully be able to enjoy an ample amount of blackberries. We promise to eventually perfect organic bramble berry production! Thank you for understanding.

Welcoming Radishes and First of Strawberries
Expected Harvest
By Derek McGeehan
Strawberries have begun ripening thanks to last week's mini heat wave. With the cooler and wetter weather they'll ripen less quickly, which normally means the season lasts longer. Right now there's only enough for us to pick for you; eventually they'll be opened up for u-pick. Gabe and Abigail sit on an attractive dry-stack stone miniwall made by assistant farmer Pat.
Harvest #2 (Week B) should include radishes, strawberries, kale, chard, arugula, bok choy, broccoli raab, mizuna, spinach, lettuce, green garlic, and perennial herbs. Some items may be a choice. U-pick should include perennial herbs.
Roots and greens of radishes are edible raw or cooked. To subdue the radish spiciness try cutting the root in half and pan frying for a few minutes in fat/oil and salt. Greens can be eaten is salads, smoothies, or cooked any which way.

sea of greens
Harvest #1 (Week A) should include kale, spinach, chard, bok choy, arugula, mizuna, broccoli raab, green garlic, oregano, mint, and winter savory. Some items will be a choice.
What is green garlic? Good question! It is the young/immature garlic plant, edible in its entirety. Simply use like a leek or a scallion.
Most of the greens this week can be used interchangeably in a salad, stir fried, sautéed, smoothied, or gently cooked on the stove top.
There may not be any u-pick this week as we attempt to round out the portion of the share that we harvest with herbs from the perennial herb garden. With the expected heat wave this week, crops should grow by leaps and bounds and u-pick should begin shortly. Strawberries, peas, and herbs picked by you aren't far away! Thank you for understanding.
Farm dog Borcie strikes a pose between beds of spinach and chard. Miracles of row cover plus an extra fertile previously fallowed field allowed these crops to grow fast and furiously.

A simple way to incorporate your miscellaneous roots or cabbage into any meal is to grate them. A Green Time
Expected Harvest
By Derek McGeehan
Harvest #20 (Week B) should include lettuce, kale, cabbage, broccoli, garlic, butternut, spinach, chard, arugula, mizuna, beets, kohlrabi, eggplant, sweet peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes, green tomatoes, leeks, and potatoes. Some items will be a choice and may not be available during all pick up times. U-pick should include cherry tomatoes, dill, cilantro, parsley, herbal basil, and perennial herbs.
Seeded less than a month ago, these greens grew extremely quickly thanks to a very warm September, irrigation, and one or two rainstorms. The preceding 3-year fallow period may also have given the crops a special dose of soil biology. On the right side is a cover crop of buckwheat, peas, and red clover.

Approaching Autumn
Expected Harvest
By Derek McGeehan
Harvest #19 (Week A) should include broccoli, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, butternut, kale, lettuce, garlic, onions, leeks, chard, turnips, radishes, beets, okra, hot peppers, sweet peppers, eggplant, and chives. Some items may be a choice and may not be available during all pick up times. U-pick should include cherry tomatoes and herbs.
This year's broccoli haul will probably be less epic than the past couple of seasons due to a rough stretch of weather in July, but we're still hopeful for a few good weeks of broccoli harvest. Also, the crop is under attack from a multitude of insect pests including the harlequin bug, cabbage looper, imported cabbageworm, cross-striped cabbageworm, and flea beetles. Soaking your broccoli in salty water will help remove the creatures prior to cooking.

Watered Crops
Expected Harvest
By Derek McGeehan
Harvest #18 (Week B) should include butternut winter squash, potatoes, garlic, scallions, onions, kale, chard, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplant, sweet peppers, hot peppers, carrots, okra, chives, leeks, and radishes. Some items will be a choice and may not be available on all pick up days. U-pick should include cherry tomatoes, husk cherries, tomatillos, flowers, and herbs. Unless it rains soon, the majority of u-pick crops will end very soon.
Freshly cultivated and irrigation dependent kale, napa cabbage, fennel, broccoli and other fall crops appreciate the dry weather, as long as we can give them the water they need. In our soils, a little goes a long way. These beds are drip irrigated which has been temporarily removed for cultivation purposes.

Sweet dumpling and delicata winter squash will probably be distributed this week. These varieties do not store very long so try to eat them soon. Simply cut in half, scoop out the seeds, and roast for 45 minutes at 400 degrees. Soak the seeds in water to easily separate them from the connective tissue - you'll have to use your hands here - and add them to a pan to roast as well.
